William Alton Scott
February 23, 1939 – October 10, 2026
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant." — Matthew 25:21
William Alton Scott, affectionately known as "Alton," of Fairmont, North Carolina, passed away at his residence on October 10, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on February 23, 1939, he was the son of the late Addis Scott and Marion Ruth Barnes Scott of Barnesville, North Carolina.
Alton lived a life defined not simply by the years he was given, but by the faith he practiced, the family he loved, and the quiet example he set for those fortunate enough to know him. A man of strong Christian conviction, he understood that faith was more than something to profess on Sunday mornings. It was something to demonstrate in the ordinary moments of everyday life.
He did not merely share his faith; he lived it.
Throughout his working years, Alton was known for his dedication and strong work ethic. He served as manager of Southern States in Fairmont and spent many years working for Lowe's Corporation and House Doctors Handyman Service. An avid fisherman, he also found great enjoyment in life's simple pleasures, particularly the peace and quiet of time spent outdoors.
Central to Alton's life was his Christian faith and his service as a deacon at First Baptist Church. For him, Christianity was not merely a set of beliefs, but a way of living. His faith was reflected in his devotion to his church, his commitment to his family, and the example he set through his daily actions. He understood that a meaningful life is measured not only by what one accomplishes, but by the kindness one extends, the responsibilities one faithfully fulfills, and the lives one touches along the way.
Above all, Alton's greatest earthly blessings were found in his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ida Rouse Scott; his children, Cammie Pait (Mitchell), Jeffrey Scott (Regina), and Gina Stephens (Phillip); his cherished grandchildren, Celeste Potash, Brannon Pait, Matthew Stephens, Andrew Stephens, Ryan Scott, and Stanley Scott; and his great-grandchildren, Ethan Potash, Abby Potash, Paisley Pait, and Olivia Pait. He is also survived by his brother, Stevie Scott (Debbie).
In addition to his parents, Alton was preceded in death by his brother, Addis Carey Scott, and his sisters, Myrtle Ruth Earnheart, affectionately known as "Scottie,", and Patricia Ann Scott.
The family also wishes to recognize his special caregivers, Earlene Hunt and Teresa Willoughby, whose kindness and compassionate care were deeply appreciated.
While his passing brings sorrow to those who loved him, his life offers something far more enduring than grief: the example of a man whose faith gave purpose to his days and whose devotion to family gave meaning to his years. His legacy lives on in the memories he leaves behind, the family who carries his name, and the Christian example he lived before others.
The Apostle Paul wrote, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7). These words offer a fitting reflection on a life grounded in Christian conviction and faithful service.
Alton Scott's earthly journey has ended, but the influence of a life lived in faith does not end with death. It continues in the hearts of those he loved, the lives he touched, and the example he leaves for generations to come.
And for those who share his Christian faith, there is comfort in the promise that death is not the end of the story, but the beginning of an eternal homecoming.
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant ... enter thou into the joy of thy lord." — Matthew 25:21
