Thomas G. Long, age 90, died April 14, 2013 with his family by his side at Southeastern Medical Center in Lumberton, NC after a brief hospitalization. He was born December 7, 1922 in Buffalo, New York to Thomas A. and Irena Blair Long. During World War II he served on Okinawa as a dental technician assigned to the 16th General Hospital. After returning from the war, he married "the girl next-door," Joyce Ruth Beck on September 13, 1947 in Buffalo. Tom Long started his career with Acme Electric in 1951. In 1967, he left the management of the Acme Electric plant in Allegany, New York to come south to oversee the start up and construction, and to manage the new Acme plant in Lumberton. In 1983, Acme Electric Corporation created a new division called the Acme Electric Transformer Division and named Tom Long as general manager. Soon after, he was named Vice President. During his management, he started each day walking through the plant greeting employees, praising their work, and listening to their concerns. When he retired in 1988, he was named Robeson County's first Industrialist of the Year. While living in Cuba, New York he served as Sunday School Superintendant at the Methodist Church and he was also a past Master and a Scottish Rites, 32nd degree Mason. In Lumberton, he was a member of the Rotary Club, the Lumberton Chamber of Commerce, and the Mayor's Committee for City Progress. He served the Robeson County Public library as a trustee for twelve years, six years as Chairman. The library was close to his heart and he greatly valued the opportunity to lead his community in that capacity. He also served on Southeastern Regional Medical Center's board of trustees and Foundation board. He will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity. In retirement, Tom loved to garden, he loved to play bridge, and he loved to watch "The Lawrence Welk Show." But his first love was the game of golf. He began playing golf at the age of nine, and became a three handicap golfer. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Joyce Long; his daughter Pamela and son-in-law Gordon Britt of Proctorville; his son Robert and daughter-in-law Rosemary Long of Lumberton; grandchildren Ruth and Ronald Rivas, Elizabeth and A.J. Meloy, and great-grandson John Rivas. Still living in New York are his sister Joan Haft and brother-in-law Paul Haft and other extended family. The family's deepest appreciation and love are extended to Mildred Sinclair, Melissa Branch and Jackie Britt for their wonderful loving care.
