Sybil Thorndyke Hedgpeth took God's hand and stepped into Heaven on Thursday, March 23, 2017. Her 87-year journey through the world, including her season of Alzheimer's disease, has ended.
She was born in Robeson County on December 28, 1929 to her late parents, Joseph and Vivian Thorndyke.
She was also preceded in death by her brother, Knox Thorndyke, and two sisters: Madeline Young and Eugenia Meares.
Sybil leaves to cherish her memory her children: Fonda Worthington and husband Randall of Surf City and Jimmy Hedgpeth and Janine Baculik of Lumberton; her grandchildren: Dr. Leslie Singer and husband Scott of Cary and Cole Hedgpeth of Virginia; her great-grandchildren: Weston Singer and Laney Singer, both of Cary; four brothers: J. F. Thorndyke, Ed Thorndyke, Luke Thorndyke, and George Thorndyke; four sisters: Elizabeth Nye, Kellen Byrd, Veila Nye, and Sheila Thorndyke, all of Lumberton; and many loving extended family members and friends.
Sybil was a member of the generation who worked hard and lived frugally. She grew up working on the family farm and as an adult she worked many years in the insurance business. She was a strong woman who always tried to do what was right.
Sybil loved her family and the Lord. Her joy in life was being a devoted daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. Another important part of her life was being a member of Long Branch Baptist Church and participating in the Joy Group. Her faith gave her strength and courage throughout her life.
Sybil always had a list of activities to keep her busy. In her early years, she could be found on the basketball court outshooting most of her teammates. She enjoyed vegetable- and flower-gardening, square dancing, and was well known for her cooking skills, especially her delicious cakes. She kept a bag packed and ready to go to the beach if given the opportunity. We will always love her and enjoy the special memories that she leaves us all.
A time of visitation will take place prior to the service on Sunday, March 26, 2017, from 1:00-2:00 PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc.
Following the visitation, a celebration of Sybil's life will be held at 2:00 PM in the Chapel with Rev. Brett Young officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Long Branch Baptist Church Joy Group, 8878 Hwy 72 East, Lumberton, NC 28358.
Sybil's family is grateful to God for her life and they appreciate all acts of kindness, love, and prayers bestowed upon them during her illness and passing.
"Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories."
