Susan Britt Welsh, born November 11, 1922, passed away August 9, 2013. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Britt, Sr., and wife of the late Edwin Anderson Welsh, Sr. As a lifelong resident of Lumberton, she grew up in the First Baptist Church and became a passionately dedicated Christian leader, who tirelessly served both the church and her community. She was one of the first women to be ordained as a Deacon in the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Welsh also served as director of WMU (Baptist Women), sang in the adult choir, senior choir and rang in the hand-bell choir for many years. She headed numerous committees through the years, including Hospitality, where she and her committee provided meals and comfort to so many families in their times of bereavement. For many years she taught Sunday School across all ages and departments, and upon her retirement as a Sunday School teacher, her adult women's class chose to name themselves in her honor, and is now known as the Susan B. Welsh Class. Mrs. Welsh served most of her professional career as the Office Manager of Southeastern Regional Mental Health/Industrial Center, and valued her work on the Mayor's Committee. A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was also a past President of Town and Country Garden Club, an avid bridge player and championship amateur golfer. She is survived by her children Elizabeth J. Welsh and Mark Edwin Andersen; her sisters-in-law, Bobbie Britt and Louise Britt; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers E. J. Britt, Jr., Rowland C. Britt, Thomas M. Britt, and Louten R. Britt, her sister Hesba, and an infant brother.
