Mrs. Sudie Baxley Smith, 80, of Lumberton, NC, was born in Tar Heel, NC on October 24, 1941 to the late Daniel Corbett and Marian Baxley. She departed this life on Sunday, December 19, 2021, at UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton, NC.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Albert P. Smith, Sr.; a sister, Sarah Atkinson; and a brother, Robert Sherwood Baxley.

She worked at Fairmont Knitting Mill until moving to Lumberton where she began working at Kendall (which later became Gerber Children's Wear) until the mill closed. She then went back to school to become a CNA and a CNA II and began working at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, now UNC Health Southeastern. She retired in August 2020 due to concerns with her health and the COVID pandemic.

Sudie was a member of Godwin Heights Baptist Church since 1965, having served in various positions. She was G.A. Director for many years and then WMU Director. She was very passionate about these positions. One of her favorite missions was the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, for which she had been working diligently to raise money.

She is survived by her son, Albert Paul Smith, Jr. (Paula); her daughter, Beverly Smith Norton (Terry) of Lumberton, NC; her grandchildren: Kelsey Norton Fann (Tate), Pearce Adam Smith of Lumberton, NC, and Jenna Paige Smith of Charlotte, NC; two great-grandchildren, Madelyn Jane Fann and Owen Tate Fann, both of Lumberton, NC; her sisters, Peggy Bray and Carol Davis, both of Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, from 1:00-2:00 PM at Godwin Heights Baptist Church, 704 Godwin Avenue in Lumberton, NC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM with Rev. David Hawes and Dr. Lynn Bullock officiating.

Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, NC.
