Obituary

In loving memory of our mother, Sarah Irene Pomer Surface (Nicknames lovingly used, "Sally" and "Buffy"), 73 years old, of Due West, SC, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, surrounded by loving family at the home of her daughter, Helen Surface, in Lumberton, NC.

Sarah Irene Pomer was born on August 16, 1951, in Washington D.C. at Georgetown University Hospital. She was the daughter of the late honorable Judge Oscar Jay Pomer and the late Helen Malone Pomer. Oscar was a World War II Army Veteran, a Mason, and a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Association of Federal Administrative Law Judges. Helen was a graduate of the Catholic University in Washington D.C. where she obtained her bachelor's degree, and Master of Laws.

Sally was a student at AC Flora High School in Columbia, SC, she left AC Flora in 1967 at the age of 16 to attend Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC. Where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 1971. Sally continued her education at The College of Charleston; she graduated in 1980 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. In addition, furthering her education, Sally attended The University of South Carolina, Midlands Technical College in Columbia SC, and obtained an associate degree in respiratory therapy.

Sally was an entrepreneur and started a business named Lumber River Outfitters, LTD. She established her business in Lumberton, NC then later moved to Downtown Fayetteville, NC. She was fond of exploring, taking guided tours out on the Lumber and Cape Fear Rivers. She valued sharing her knowledge of kayaking and enjoyed making coffee and specialty drinks at her coffee bar. Sally treasured collaborating with others and had a vibrant personality, and a witty sense of humor. Sally deeply loved animals, her Border Collies especially were her pride and joy. Sally shared an immense joy of cooking, baking, and experimenting with new recipes. Sally was a weaving enthusiast and enjoyed working on her loom, and was always eager to learn new methods of the craft. Sally was a multifaceted artist, she actively pursued creative expression through a variety of artistic mediums, whether it be painting, photography, sewing, knitting and other forms of art throughout her life, all driven by a deep love for the arts. Sally truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasure, chatting with friends and family, word searches, crossword puzzles and reading. Her greatest achievement was shepherding her daughters Helen and Sarah into strong, independent women. She cherished her daughters, and they cherished her. She rejoiced in their successes, large or small, with a frequent quick witted "I did something right." Her words of encouragement will be sorely missed.

Sally was a cradle Episcopalian, a member of The Daughters of the King. She had visited and enjoyed services at the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Greenwood, SC. She was an attendee of The Blessing of the Animals on St. Francis Day, where she had all her dogs blessed. It was always a sight to see with her driving up in her little "popemobile" as she jokingly called it, with her dogs looking out ready for an adventure.

Remaining to cherish Sally's memory are her twin daughters, Helen Surface of Lumberton, NC and Sarah Surface of Raeford, NC; former spouse, J. Robert Surface of Honea Path, SC; special friends: Cherrie Carse, Carol Capps Case, Winthrop Class of 1971 Lunch B unch, Richard Cummings, and Joseph Harvey; and cousins: Steve Cinader, Valerie and Varn Keith, Kayla Tortora, of Walterboro, SC, and Rev. Mary Balfour Dunlap, with the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection.

Sally's wishes were to have a Celebration of Life in her honor at the home of her daughter, Helen Surface. Date and time will be shared when finalized.

We ask that if any of Sally's friends and family have any questions feel free to contact her daughters, we thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers during this challenging time. Sally wished to be interred at Monticello Memory Gardens in Charlottesville, VA, alongside her parents.

A Prayer for a Daughter of the King Who Has Died

Dear Heavenly Father, we bless You for all those who have departed this life in Your faith and fear, especially Your Daughter, our sister, Sally. Through her loving service to others and The Order and her way of prayerful living she endeavored to perfect Your will in her life. May her deep faith be an inspiration to all and so illumine the hearts of women and girls to find You along their earthly pilgrimage. Grant that the light of Your presence and Your eternal peace be her great and everlasting reward.

AMEN
