Obituary

Sara Price Grimes, age 94, formerly of Lumberton, NC, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, March 30, 2021. She had been living in Statesville, NC near her family for the last several years. Sara was born in 1926 in Rowland, NC to the late John A. Price and Mary Frances Hayes. She was the youngest of five brothers and sisters.

For most of Sara's life in Lumberton, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Lumberton. Sara spent most of her career working at Southern National Bank and retired from BB&T in 1991 after 24 years.

She began volunteering with Robeson Little Theater in 1969 and served for decades as the treasurer. Her directing debut was a 1974 production of Thornton Wilder's "Our Town." She reprised "Our Town" 30 years later in 2004 as her final show. Sara was called the "Godmother" of RLT by the cast of the 1997 production of "Crimes of the Heart" in which she directed.

Her family fondly remembers the 1979 production of "The Sound of Music" that Sara directed and produced at Lumberton's Joe P. Moore Auditorium. In the April 15, 1979 Robesonian publication, Sara was asked why she took on both roles as director and producer. She replied, "Because I'm crazy – but I know it will come off – somehow!" And she was right. In the April 27, 1979 review of the show, The Robesonian entertainment editor Lee Hamilton wrote, "Sara Grimes has come forth with another great big winner to add to her ever-growing list. 'Twas fun!"

Along with her parents and her siblings, Sara was preceded in death by two children, Robert Grimes and Cathy VanDusen.

She is survived by two children, Barbara Grimes Rice of Davidson, NC and John Grimes (Ginny) of Statesville, NC, and loved by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their families.
