Obituary

Robert Charles Holloway, age 96, of Lumberton, left this Earth on Wednesday, September 27, 2017, with no regrets and a full heart.

Originally from Redlands, CA, he grew up on a farm that produced oranges, peaches, and, at one time, even chickens. He joined the Army Air Corps and became a Glider Pilot during WWII at 23 years of age. While stationed for basic training at Laurinburg-Maxton AFB in NC, he met Madeline Linkhaw, of Lumberton and they married after his return from overseas in France and Germany.

After earning a degree from Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, CA in HVAC, he and Madeline moved back to Lumberton where he has remained ever since. He worked in HVAC for several years, mostly traveling.

When his daughter, Caroline, was born, he wanted to be closer to home so he took a teaching position at Lumberton High School. With his degree, he assisted with the setting up and maintenance of the HVAC system in what was then the "new" Lumberton Senior High School. He also continued to teach for 19 years; a beloved teacher who loved his students, as they did him.

He remained active after retirement and particularly enjoyed swimming and a good game of golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde C. Holloway and Grace North Holloway of Redlands, CA and two sisters and a brother: Barbara Van Diest, Ruth Fitz-Gerald, and Edwin Holloway, all of California. He also lost his beloved wife, Madeline Linkhaw Holloway, in 2000.

He is survived by his daughter, Caroline Holloway Kahn of Fort Myers, FL; two granddaughters: Elizabeth May Leach and Laura Caroline, both of CA; a sister, Margaret Kullberg of Petaluma, CA; plus so very, very many nieces, nephews, (great- and great-great) and cousins; and a very special friend, Tony Barnes. One very special survivor is his precious dog, Schatzi, who stayed by his side and gave him so much love.

A time of visitation will take place prior to the service on Thursday, October 5, 2017, from 10:00-11:00 AM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc. in Lumberton.

Following the visitation, a memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM in the Chapel. After the service, the family welcomes guests to join them at "the house" for food, drink, and sharing of memories.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Home Society of NC, PO Box 14608, Greensboro, NC 27415.
