Riley Morrison Baxley, Jr., age 89, of Ocean Isle Beach, passed away on Friday, March 2, 2018. He was born January 15, 1929 and served in the US Navy from 1947-1951 as a Naval Photographer. Upon departure from the Navy, he worked and retired in Washington, D.C., enjoying one of his passions, photography.
His other passions included his love of sports cars – Uncle Riley said he was the only farm owner without a pick-up truck. But, by far, his greatest love was sailing with his dear friends, Bill and Darlene Ward, and many, many other friends who shared the same passion.
Riley stated on many occasions that he had a full and good life with wonderful family and friends.
Riley was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Johnson Baxley and Riley M. Baxley, Sr., and his beloved sister, Jean Baxley Powers.
Riley is survived by his beloved sister, Margaret Baxley Branch of Lumberton, who fondly referred to him as "Buddy"; his nephews: W.T. Powers and wife Caryl, Alex Branch and wife Kim, all of Lumberton, and Johnny Branch and wife Tracy of Ocean Isle Beach; his nephews' children: Ashley Powers and fiancé Jay Baxley, Caleb Powers and expectant wife Jennifer, and Josh Branch; and three great-great-nieces: Grace, Hailey, and Aubreigh.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at 2:00 PM at Floyd Memorial Chapel with Rev. David McClellan officiating. The family will receive friends briefly following the funeral.
