Obituary

Peggy Haynie Purvis, 93, formerly of Fairmont, NC and currently of Raleigh, NC, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2015. She was born to Ruby Roach Haynie and Thomas Hugh Haynie on Nov. 24, 1922 in Decatur, Ga. She graduated from Decatur Girls High and attended the University of Georgia where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She remained close friends with her sorority sisters well into her nineties.

During World War II, Peggy met her future husband, Dr. P.C. Purvis, who was on the faculty of Atlanta Southern Dental College. They were married on Nov. 11, 1944 and enjoyed 67 years of marriage. She and P.C. were stationed in Parris Island, SC, Pass Cristian, LA, and Galveston, Texas, before they settled in Fairmont, N.C. P.C.'s hometown, where he practiced dentistry for forty-five years. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Rebecca and Wilton, and P.C., who died in 2012. For the past few years, she has faced life with courage, resolve, and her infectious sense of humor, always keeping abreast of family activities and news about her family. Peggy had a unique ability to adapt to new experiences: moving from Atlanta to a small town in North Carolina and, most recently, moving from that small town to Raleigh to be near her children. In both cases, she adjusted, met new friends, and lived her life fully.

Peggy made a wonderful life for herself, raising children, teaching Sunday School at Fairmont Baptist Church, belonging to a bridge club for fifty years, playing golf, and enjoying hobbies such as arranging flowers, doing crossword puzzles, reading, and traveling. Her devotion to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will be her legacy. She created an inviting home, wonderful meals and holidays, many travel experiences to the beach, and family trips. These are the memories her family will cherish. She said lately that her greatest prayer was for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to be happy.

She is survived by her three children: Judy Purvis Williams, Thomas Haynie Purvis (Sable), and Blair Henley Purvis (Janet) and four grandchildren: Kelly Purvis Edwards (Jamie), Andrew Hunter Williams (Sallie), Emily Williams King (Scott), and James Thomas Purvis (Veronica). Peggy was also blessed with seven great grandchildren: Walker and Grayson Williams, Finley and Cooper King, and Ethan, Cameron, and Hannah Edwards.

A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate her life at the First Baptist Church in Fairmont, N.C. at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2015. Private graveside service will be held prior to the memorial service.
