Obituary

Mrs. Peggy Lou McLellan Lewis, who lived an exemplary life of Christian love by always putting the welfare of others ahead of her own, died at home on the family farm in the loving care of her three children on January 19, 2015, after a brief, but brave struggle against cancer. She was 78. She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Jetter Garth Lewis. She is survived by two sons, a daughter and their spouses: Jeff and Lu Lewis; Robert and Jo Ann Lewis; and Mary Lewis and Jim Pate, all of Fairmont. She is also survived by five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. "Miz Peggy," as she was known and loved by many, was born April 12, 1936, in the Bethesda community south of Fairmont. She was the fourth of seven children, and the only daughter born to Quinton Asher McLellan and Fannie Lee Walters McLellan. Her childhood on a rural farm struggling to survive the Great Depression, and her mother's diagnosis with breast cancer when Peggy was 8, meant a short childhood and the long hours of great responsibility at a very tender age. When Peggy was 10, her mother died. During the two years prior, especially afterward, Peggy was the household cook, clothes washer, housekeeper and surrogate mother to her brothers. They are: Quinton Asher McLellan, Jr. of Rockville, MD; Willie Robert McLellan, deceased; Duncan Preston McLellan, deceased; John Simpson McLellan, who owned and operated John's Restaurant in Lumberton, also deceased; Albert Huckabee McLellan of Fairmont; and Archie Kinnon McLellan of South Hill, VA. She was known for her rock-hard devotion to family, her giving spirit to the community, her devout loyalty to her church family and unwavering faith in the teachings of Jesus Christ. She was a fine cook, a fastidious housekeeper and a loving mother figure to many beyond the threshold of her home. Peggy Lewis was also an adoring, but determined and sometimes stern wife and mother to her husband, her two sons and her daughter. Understanding the incurable nature of her final illness, she faced death with a strong spirit, sure in her faith and a typically unselfish concern for the people around her who cared for her final needs and wishes. A funeral will be at 2:00PM on Wednesday, the 21st of January, at the First Baptist Church on South Main Street, Fairmont. Interment will follow in the Fairmont Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, the 20th of January, from 6:00-8:00PM at Floyd Funeral Services, Inc. in Fairmont. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Ashpole Bookclub Scholarship Fund, 509 Golf Course Road, Fairmont, NC 28340.
