She enjoyed homemaking, gardening, and reading. She loved the arts and had a real flair for entertaining. Mary was a force of nature, strong willed, energetic, and always up for a variety of adventures.  She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Richard Cooper of Davis, CA; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Susan Hatchell of Raleigh, NC; and her grandson, Justin Cooper and Justin's children, Ian and Helen, of San Francisco, CA.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Stuart Hatchell, and her son, Taylor Hatchell.

The family wishes to thank the loving and supportive staff at Wesley Pines Retirement and Nursing Home where Mary lived her last three years, as well as the staff of Community Home Care & Hospice for their patient and loving care during the last few months of her life.
