Obituary

Marx Nathan, loving husband, father, and devoted friend, passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at the age of 92 at First Health Hospice in Pinehurst, NC.

Marx was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. S.A. Nathan and Hattie Mae Nathan, as well as his son, Robert "Bob" Nathan.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Dorothy; his daughter, Pat Nathan-Groves (Mervyn); and several nephews and a niece.

Born in Chapel Hill on November 29, 1926, Marx was "Tarheel born and Tarheel bred".  He received his accounting degree from the University of North Carolina where he also played basketball from 1946-1948 and played in the marching band as well. Marx went on to serve his country in the US Air Force, retiring as a major.

Marx began his professional career with A.M. Pullen in Raleigh and moved to Lumberton in 1950, where he became a trusted financial advisor to the K.M. Biggs family. In fact, Marx played a pivotal role in the development of Biggs Park.

Marx was an athlete, a musician, a thespian, and a poet. He was happiest on the golf course, playing with the New Horizons in the Pines Band, or at Wrightsville Beach. He displayed a quick wit and never met a stranger.

He served in many roles at the First Presbyterian Church of Lumberton and, later, at West End Presbyterian Church in West End, NC. In 2014, he was presented the Faithful Saint Recognition by the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina for his Christian discipleship and contributions to the mission of the Presbyterian Church. He was also active in a variety of civic organizations, always first in line to help with any project. He was awarded the 2006 Jack Stickley Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services by the North Carolina Lions Foundation.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at 2:00 PM at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton with Rev. David Ruth officiating.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2019, at 2:00 PM at West End Presbyterian Church, 275 Knox Lane in West End, followed by a reception.
