Obituary

Margaret Adkins Campbell, age 96, passed away peacefully at her residence in Lumberton, NC surrounded by her family. She was born January 7, 1925 in Memphis, TN to the late Col. Virgil S. Adkins and Nona Sharp Adkins of Clarksdale, MS.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, John Wishart Campbell, and her three brothers, Col. V.S. Adkins II (Jean), Dr. H. Leigh Adkins (Judy), and Dr. James M. Adkins (Linda).

She is survived by her children: John Wishart Campbell, Jr. (Judy) of Manassas, VA, Leigh Campbell Pope (Grady) of Shallotte, NC, Lisa Campbell Stuart (Bob) of Raleigh, NC, and "like-daughters" Kathy Bryan Smith (Steward) of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Rene O'Neal Campbell of North Myrtle Beach, SC and Betty Smith (Steve) of Lumberton, NC; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Additionally, Betty Nye has been a faithful friend for many years and her thoughtfulness, generosity, and kindness are appreciated beyond words. In the later stages of Margaret's life, Martha Gardner was an invaluable companion and caregiver.

After graduating from Clarksdale, MS High School, Margaret attended Mississippi State College for Women, subsequently matriculating to the University of Mississippi. While a student at "Ole Miss", she met and later married John Wishart Campbell on Christmas Day 1944.

Margaret and John relocated to UNC Chapel Hill at the conclusion of WWII – he attending law school and she working in the admissions office during the "Golden Era" at UNC. While living in Victory Village (married student housing) with other veteran families, life-long friendships and a passion for Carolina athletics (particularly basketball) grew and became a source of enjoyment throughout her life.

In addition to being an accomplished tennis player and fitness advocate, Margaret was an avid golfer and longtime member of Pinecrest Country Club. She enjoyed regular rounds with longtime friends as well as up-and-coming golfers and participated in many tournaments across the Sandhills area. She recorded 3 holes-in-one during her playing days and could recount the holes and club used to her last days.

The world has lost a truly extraordinary woman – quick of wit, devoted to her family, and deeply centered in her faith. Her ever-present smile and zest for life reminds us how fortunate we are to have shared time with her.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 at 11:00AM at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, NC with Revs. David and Eva Ruth officiating.
