Obituary

When Louise Humphrey Rice Oliver, 93, died September 14, 2015, at Wesley Pines Retirement Center in Lumberton, NC, heaven gained an angel and a new and glorious life began for her. Louise was born in St. Pauls to Stinson and Caroline Humphrey. She graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1940 and the Baker School of Nursing in Lumberton in 1943. She worked as a registered nurse in an airplane factory during WW II in Miami, a floor supervisor at the hospital in Goldsboro, a private duty nurse at Southeastern General Hospital, and an assistant director of nursing at Wesley Pines. A devoted wife and mother, Louise loved taking care of her family. And if someone in the community was in need, she was there helping in any way that she could. Louise was famous for her pound cakes and was happiest when she was gardening, cooking, and entertaining family and friends. She imparted to her children the values of making good decisions, working hard to achieve goals, being frugal, overcoming adversity, and caring about and helping others. Strongly believing in the opportunities that education could offer, Louise took pride in that all of her children earned college degrees. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Elmer Rice in 1956 and Braddy Oliver in 2007. She was also preceded in death by her son, Marion Rice, her six brothers and sisters, and two grandchildren, Mary Frances Harris and Larry N. Oliver, Jr. She is survived by her children and their spouses: Jim and Janice Rice, Stan and Annette Leggett, John and Taryn Williams, Henry and Jean Harris, Larry and Rebecca Oliver, and Harold and Sue Salmon. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Betty Rice; 9 grandchildren: Jim, Lindsay, Steve, William, Amelia, Jeanie, Tracey, Susan, and Sharon; 10 great grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank all those friends and neighbors who visited her at Wesley Pines. And, too, the family would like to express their thanks and appreciation for the wonderful, loving care given to Louise by Wesley Pines, Community Hospice, and Dr. Ben Hardin. In lieu of flowers to remember Louise, please consider donating to Wesley Pines Benevolent Fund, 1000 Wesley Pines Road, Lumberton, NC 28358. Family will receive friends and relatives on Friday, September 18, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. at Floyd Mortuary in Lumberton followed by a celebration of her life in the funeral home chapel at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Harold Salmon officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.
