Obituary

Lawrence Edward Ward, 80, passed away peacefully at his home on October 4, 2026. He was born on April 20, 1946, in Roseboro, NC, to the late Mrs. Dovie Ward. Lawrence was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Dovie Ward, and his brother, John Walters.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 41 years, Rebecca Ward, of the home; two sons, Timothy Ward (Nancy) of Hendersonville, TN, Michael Ward (Sky) of Lumberton, NC; five grandchildren: Scot Ward (Kelly-Anne), Alyssa Ward, Dylan Ward, Lizzy Ward, and Hazley Ward; a brother Pate Walters (Frances) of Lincolnton, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was also a devoted parent figure to Brandon Canady and Harley McNeill. Lawrence was dedicated to his family and a hardworking man. He was a loving husband, a wonderful father, and a treasured friend. Becky was the apple of his eye. Their love began at first sight, and his devotion to her was evident to everyone who knew them. As a dad, Lawrence was someone his sons could turn to with the hard things in life. They knew they could speak openly with him, and he would help them figure out the best way to handle whatever they were facing. He offered wisdom, understanding, and the steady reassurance of a father's love.

Above all, Lawrence treasured relationships. If you were a friend, you knew it. He gave freely of his time, money, and his energy. His grandchildren brought him tremendous joy for many years ranging from 33 years old to 3 years old. He enjoyed many years of love as Papa. His nieces and nephews admired and looked up to him, and yes his in-laws too! He had a kind sense of humor. Most people know Lawrence as the "Blind Man." Prior to his own business, he served in the Navy as a radar specialist from 1964-1968. Lawrence had a remarkable mind and a wealth of knowledge that he generously shared with others. He was an avid reader. A good week was one in which he could read a book a day. His curiosity and love of learning were part of what made conversations with him so special. Lawrence was an active member of Chestnut Street Methodist Church where he cherished his church family. Lawrence enjoyed going out to eat each week with his church group. Though he has gone to his eternal home, his memory, kindness, generosity, wisdom and love will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and everyone whose life he touched.

The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 2:00-3:00 PM at Chestnut Street Methodist Church, 200 E. 8th Street in Lumberton, NC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM with Rev. Herbert Lowry officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Faith Cemetery, 5190 N. Fayetteville Road in Lumberton, NC.
