Obituary

Katherine Scott Baird passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at the age of 90 at Budd Terrace Skilled Nursing Center at Wesley Woods in Atlanta.  She is survived by her daughter, Kate Hammond Burch and her husband Scott Burch of Atlanta; her granddaughter, Parker Hammond of Atlanta; her grandsons, Wagner Burch of Atlanta, and Todd Thompson of Wilmington, N.C.; a step-daughter, Norma Hoffman and her husband, Carl of Wilmington, N.C.; and her sister, Ann Tolar of Goldsboro, N.C.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry Leftridge Scott and Elizabeth Draughon Scott of Fayetteville, N.C.; her husband Dr. Norman George Baird of Lumberton, N.C.; sisters Ellen Scott and Jennie Bleecker of Fayetteville, N.C.; brothers Charles Scott, Edgar Scott, Bill Scott, Berry Scott, and Buck Scott of Fayetteville, N.C., Jimmy Scott or Bedford, Va., and William Scott of Whiteville, N.C.;  her grandson, Luther Thompson of Wilmington, N.C.; and her step-son, George Baird of Lumberton, N.C.

Katherine was born on June 18, 1925, in Fayetteville, N.C.  She enjoyed working hard but also enjoyed celebrating life.  She took pleasure in spending time with her nine siblings and was an equestrian at heart.  As an avid entertainer, she loved hosting family and friends.  Cooking and gardening brought her great joy.  Katherine was happiest surrounded by others and was always very social.  She was generous beyond words and never met a stranger.

Katherine was active in her community.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lumberton, N.C., and she taught Sunday school for several years.   She cherished her friendships made through the church.  She and her husband were patrons of the Border Belt Association in support of their mutual love of horses.  Katherine also served as local and state president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, as well as an advocate for the Children of the Confederacy and Sons of the Confederacy.  She did ground breaking work for the Southeastern North Carolina Agricultural Events Center, and she was very proud of this contribution that combined all of her passions.

Katherine moved to Atlanta two years ago. She spent as much time as possible with her beloved grandchildren. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend.  Her generous spirit, faith in people and in God, and genuine goodness will leave a mark for eternity on those who knew her.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Lumberton, N.C., located at 606 North Walnut Street. Graveside services will immediately follow.  The family will receive relatives and friends the hour prior to the service in the church narthex.

Arrangements entrusted to Floyd Mortuary of Lumberton, N.C.
