Obituary

Joseph F. Butler, Jr. (Joe), 86, of Cary, NC slipped into the arms of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, March 25, 2017, after a brief stay with the earthly angels of Transitions Life Care (Hospice) of Raleigh.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Charles Wrape Butler (Charley). Their marriage was a testimony to love and the type of relationship to which all who knew them aspired.  He is also survived by his 5 children, Carol Fish (Geoff) of Lexington, Joe Butler III (Katie) of Lumberton, Jane Floyd (Les) of Gastonia, John Butler (Kristi) of Indian Trail, and Charles Butler (Pam) of Cary, along with 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren who dearly loved their "PaPa".
Joe was born on July 15, 1930 in Tabor City, NC to the late Joseph and Mamie Bridger Butler.  The last surviving of their 6 children, he was best known for his love of Christ, his devotion to his wife and family, and his incredible sense of humor.  He lived out his faith every day and the fruit of his life will live on for generations.
He graduated from high school at Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Va. followed by Presbyterian College (St. Andrews College) and UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a United States Coast Guard veteran of the Korean War, and spent most of his working life in the furniture industry, most recently as an executive with Kimbrell's Furniture, Inc. of Charlotte, NC.
Joe was a member of Good Hope Baptist Church in Cary, and served in many capacities, including deacon and elder, in the churches he supported over the years. He and his wife Charley were the founders of the Senior Ministry (Primetimers) at Central Church in Charlotte, NC.  He was a faithful steward of God's Word and a dedicated encourager of God's people.  His joy in the Lord was infectious, and his kind and generous spirit was endearing to all.  Surely he has now heard his Lord say, "Well done, good and faithful servant!".
A service of remembrance will be held in Lumberton, NC at Floyd Mortuary on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at 1:00 pm, with his son, Rev. John Butler, and his pastor, Rev. Josh Franklin, officiating.  Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery.  There will be a family visitation time prior to the service from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm in the chapel.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Good Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, 6628 Good Hope Church Road, Cary, NC 27219.
