Mr. Johnny Coleman Matthews, age 82, passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.  He was born on December 12, 1938 in Cumberland County, NC to the late James Brennan Matthews and the late Inez Coleman Matthews.

Mr. Matthews was a charter member of Fairmont Fire Department where he previously served as fire chief.  He was formerly employed with Ed F. Hodges Gas Company where he retired after many years and was a member of Oakton Baptist Church in Fairmont.  He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Eleanor Matthews.

Mr. Matthews is survived to his loving wife of 58 years, Jean Snipes Matthews, of the home; two daughters, Lisa Anne Matthews, of the home and Lynn Matthews-Lawson (Brad) of Lumberton; two sisters, Barbara Smith and Patsy Bullock (William), all of Fairmont and a grandson, Brady Lawson.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at 3:00PM at Floyd Memorial Cemetery in Fairmont with Pastor Mitch Tyner officiating.

Due to COVID-19 concerns, social distancing will be observed and masks will be required.
