Obituary

Johnny Allen Grooms, 70, of Lumberton, NC, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2026. He was born in Robeson County on December 9, 1955, to William Grooms and Mattie Neal Stubbs Grooms.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Sherry Grooms.

Johnny was a man who lived life with a big heart, a strong work ethic, and a love for the simple things in life. He came from a small, close-knit family, and through the way he loved, laughed, and led, he built a legacy that will live on for generations. He leaves behind six children, nineteen grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren – each one a reflection of the love and values he instilled in them.

Johnny worked for many years as the plant manager of a Concrete Manufacturing Company, where his dedication, leadership, and steady presence were deeply respected. Later, he served as a salesman for the company, building relationships and friendships wherever he went. But if you knew Johnny, you knew his heart truly belonged to the outdoors – to fishing and to the open water.

Fishing wasn't just a hobby to Johnny – it was his peace, his joy, his therapy. There was nothing he loved more than loading up his gear, hitting the water with a good friend, and spending the day on the water sharing stories, laughter, and memories. He was always happiest with a fishing pole in his hand and a friend by his side.

Johnny had a gift for friendship. He never met a stranger and would do anything for the people he cared about. His friends were like family to him, and he was the kind of man who showed up – for a fishing trip, a helping hand, a good conversation, or just to make you laugh when you needed it most. His loyalty, kindness, and humor will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.

Johnny leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Vickie Grooms; sons: Billy Grooms and wife Brooke, Johnny Grooms and wife Kimberly, and Joseph Grooms and wife Audrey; daughters: Melissa Grooms, Amber Grooms Hyatt and husband Philip, and Heather Grooms; grandchildren: Zeke Grooms, Makenzie Grooms, Paxton Grooms, Mila Grooms, Declan Grooms, Jayden Grooms, Jacksen Grooms, Colten Grooms, Kyleigh Grooms, Nicholas Grooms, Logan Wactor, Kennedy Hyatt, Dawson Hyatt, Felicity Rhymes, Zabriel Jones, Isaiah Jones, Kelsey Richardson, Tommie "T.J." Oxendine, Jr., and Marissa Carter; great-grandchildren: Preston Delvalle, Owen Devalle, Ella Oxendine, Keegan Hunt; and a host of other family and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.
