Obituary

Mr. John Beason Singletary, age 60, of Lumberton, passed away on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Robeson County on October 3, 1953 to the late Archie Singletary and the late Annie Thompson Singletary. He leaves to cherish his memories with his wife, Martis A. Singletary and his children, Monique S. McDuffie, John Singletary and Kendrix Singletary. Hey everybody it's me, John Beason Singletary. Some know me as, Mr. Singletary', Mr. John', Fireman John', Deacon John', JB', Singletary', Cousin JB', to one I'm known as Scrub', to another' brother John' to a host of nieces & nephews Uncle John or Uncle JB', papa' to three, daddy' to six and honey' to one. I love taking it easy, spending time with my family & caring for my wife, playing my guitars, finding good deals to buy & resale, reading my books, studying new subjects and traveling to the beach. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself. If you ask others they would say, I am a happy go lucky flower child who always has a smile on my face, and never worries or gets angry. They would say I am patient, kind, calm, loving and generous. I say, I am 60 years young and Lumberton is my home. In fact, I was born here on October 3, 1953 to my devoted parents, the late Archie Singletary and Annie Thompson McMillan Singletary. I was raised on the South side of Lumberton on 109 Church Street where I was surrounded by friends and family. Jesus Christ, the source of my strength and joy! Growing up we lived in Church. My childhood church home was Mt. Sinai United Holiness. At an early age, I accepted the Lord as my savior. As a man I joined Missionary Tabernacle United Holiness Church where I served as the Sunday School Superintendent, the church musician, van driver and whatever else was needed of me. As a matter of fact I was ordained as the church's first Deacon. Later in life my wife and I joined Covenant Love Church in Fayetteville, NC. I am committed to being a lifelong learner I attended school in Robeson County however some of the names of my schools have changed since I was there. First I went to South Lumberton Elementary School known today as W. H. Knuckles Elementary School. Then I went to South Lumberton Junior High School known as Lumberton Junior High School now and then Lumberton Senior High, by the same name today. After graduating from High School I attended UNCP in Pembroke, NC and Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. A Jack of all trades and a lover of life! For twelve years I served as a Fire Fighter for the City of Lumberton Fire Department. I also worked at The Robeson house and for Robeson County Public Schools assisting youth with special needs. I also earned my certification in plumbing from Robeson Community College but knew that was not the job for me once I realized I had to crawl under houses. Martis I always thought it was irresponsible to marry someone without knowing them for at least a year. But see, that was before I met Martis. You may know her as Martis Graham Singletary. I call her "Peach". We met at work. She was a teacher and I was in love. The moment I met Martis I knew without a doubt that God had sent her to be my wife. She on the other hand informed me that God had yet to enlighten her. Nonetheless, we were married within a few months on February 27, 1980. And we have been happily married for 34 years this year. For the past seven years it has been my joy to be the full time care giver for the one who has cared for me. I love that women and have loved living life with her. Till death did we part The Kids Martis gave me three of my greatest accomplishments: Monique (Michael), Kendrix (Juliet) & John(Eve)! Anyone who knows me knows that I love my family and love being available for them when they call on me. Monique, Kendrix & John Archie, take care of 'Peach' for me. Siblings To my siblings: Rayfield Singletary( Nina); Late Scoefield McMillian(Ardella); Late Isabell Swepson(Late Otha Lee Roy); Late Martha Bethea(Late Phil); Late Cora Lee Brunson (Late Irvin); Late Lydia Ruth Rogers(Late Oscar); Late Archie Singletary Jr.; Ella Mae Graham; Late Generie Powell( James); Late Audrey Edwards(Ross); Iris Moore(Larry); Pawnjola McAllister(Late Harold); Annis Graham, I Love and Thank You. Family I have a wonderful family filled with some of the world's most intelligent, talented, creative, supportive, loving, kind and God fearing individuals. Family I appreciate you! Take care of each other and look over my family for me. Good-Bye I really am going to miss spending time with everyone but my Father has called me home. I have graduated to heaven and I pray we meet again. It is time for me to go now. I know you may be a little sad but if you are wondering how I am doing," I am Getting Better By the Minute!".
