John Everett Newton, age 89, of Lumberton, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Woodhaven Nursing Center in Lumberton. He was born in Robeson County on June 2, 1921 to the late William and Mary Newton.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Larry Newton and his grandson, Jonathan Rhodes.

Mr. Newton is survived by his wife, Betty V. Newton of Lumberton, NC; two sons, Johnnie Newton of Lumberton, NC and Jim Newton and wife, Janet, both of Lumberton, NC; three daughters, Deborah Davenport and husband, Everett of Camden, NC, Karen Britt and husband, Joey of Salisbury, NC and Beth Kinlaw and husband, Bill of Lumberton, NC; six grandchildren, Tracy Newton, Ginny Carter, Meagan Newton, Sean Davidson, Holli Britt and Kristen Kinlaw and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Bray and Luke and Logan Hendren.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 2:00PM at East Lumberton Church of God with Rev. Bruce Brumfield and Rev. L.F. Hatchell officiating. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery.

A time of visitation will be held on Monday evening, May 16, 2011 from 6:00-8:00PM at East Lumberton Church of God.
