John Cole Meares, 60, of Lumberton, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday, June 18, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on September 5, 1965, in Lumberton, North Carolina. John was the son of the late JoAnn Dowless Meares and Ertle Ray Meares.

John was preceded in death by his beloved son, Zachary Ray Meares; his brother, Matthew Meares; his sister, Christina Meares;  his nephew, Josh Meares; and his niece, Sarah Meares.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Tonya Meares; his son, John Cole Meares (Michael); his daughters, Candace Lee (Austin) and Ashleigh Meares (Nate); his brothers; William Meares (Teresa) and Thomas Meares (Cathy); and his sister, Kathy Shaw (Mike). He also leaves behind six cherished grandchildren: Kinsleigh Jackson, Braylon Jackson, Tristan Jackson, Bryson Meares, Ayden Lee, and Oaklynd Lee, who brought immense joy to his life. In addition to his wife, children, and grandchildren, John is also survived by several beloved nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.

John was a man of strong faith who loved God and treasured his family above all else. He found great satisfaction in his work and spent many years in the printing industry, a profession he truly loved. Later, he continued his career working for a grocery distributor, where he was known for his dedication and strong work ethics.

John will be remembered for his love, kindness, unwavering devotion to his family, and the strength of his faith. His legacy lives in the lives of those he touched and, in the memories, shared by his family and friends. Though our hearts are heavy with loss, we take comfort in knowing that John is at peace and reunited with those who went before him.

The family will receive friends and loved ones on Sunday, June 21, 2026, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc., 809 E. 5th Street in Lumberton, NC.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Floyd Memorial Chapel, 809 E. 5th Street in Lumberton, NC, with Rev. William Meares officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Faith Cemetery, 5190 N. Fayetteville Road in Lumberton, NC.
