Obituary

"Wasn't that grand!" she might have said, as a final salutation. She lived life fully. Even legal blindness, from macular degeneration, did not slow her down in her later years. She traveled the world! Born in 1931, Joanne Shawcross grew up in Cranston, RI. She was a stand-out student at Cranston High School and graduated from Skidmore College in 1952. She married Roger Shawcross and raised three successful, independent children in Warwick, RI and then in Winchester, MA. She was visual. Her professional efforts started with teaching public school art in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Then she tried Interior Design, where she had a flair. Then she got an MBA, in her 60's! She found her niche with Planned Giving, for charitable organizations, such as Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. Joanne created her own art, in paintings and prints, but she was an even greater patron of artists. She had a collection of art pieces which was a particular point of pride and satisfaction. While her eyesight and breast cancer challenged her every day, you could never tell it. She rolled over those encumbrances as mere inconveniences and went on with what interested her in life. In 2012, she moved back down south, to be closer to her daughter, Kim, in Fayetteville, NC. Joanne, 82 years old, passed away on May 9, 2013, at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton, NC. Jo's Celebration of Life Ceremony will be at the Westminster Unitarian Church on Saturday, July 13, 2013 in East Greenwich, RI at 11:00AM.
