James "Sambo" DeVane, 73, passed away at Woodhaven Rest Home in Lumberton on Friday, March 14, 2014, after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Lewis DeVane and his sister, Nancy Wright. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Pait; his mother, Myrtle DeVane; his sisters, Betty Barnes, Mickey Morgan, and Sarah Winkler; his brother, Richard DeVane; three stepchildren, Shelley Willoughby, Jimmy Hardy, and Mary Rose Martin; six step-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
