James Chester Burden, age 83, of Lumberton, NC died on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville.  He was born in Robeson County on October 14, 1932 to the late Roy and Bertha McNeil Burden.  He previously worked for the City of Lumberton in construction.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Burden, Jr.; three brothers; and one sister.

Mr. Burden is survived by the mother of his children, Christine Burden; his sons: David Burden and Bobby Burden (Sharon) all of Lumberton; daughters: Aileen Burden and Darlene Howard, both of Lumberton, and Susanne Council (James) of White Oak; brothers: Redell Burden and Tommy Burden, both of Boston, MA; sisters: Annie Ruth McCoy of Boston, MA, and Lessie Mae McNeil of Lumberton; a special son, Cornelius McKencie; 14 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 3:30 PM at Blanch Cemetery.  A time for visitation with the family will be held on Friday, prior to the graveside service, from 2:00-3:00 PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc., 809 East 5th Street in Lumberton.
