Hubert Earl Rogers, Jr., age 80, of Wilmington, died on Monday, April 9, 2018, at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton, where he was surrounded by his loving family in his final days. He was the son of the late Hubert Earl Rogers and Helon Kinlaw Rogers. He lived in Lumberton almost half of his life before moving to Wilmington, NC.
Hubert worked in the automotive trade which he learned as a young man under the mentorship of Red Freeman. He worked in various capacities for 60 years including sales, management, ownership (Rogers Car Company), and wholesaling.
Valued as an expert by those who knew him, at the time of his death, he still had a car project or two in the wings. He was an avid NASCAR fan and he knew the generational history of the sport and the current standings. As a young man he served his country in the U.S. Air Force.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a beloved nephew, Clay Twisdale.
Hubert is survived by three children: Hubert E. Rogers III (Linda), Felicia Callilhan (Craig), and Tracy Butler (Tommy), and two grandsons: Blake Callihan and Austin Butler. He was blessed to have his first great-grandchild, Sawyer, and another expected in May. Hubert is also survived by two sisters: Patsy Watson and Helen Pridgen; two nephews and a niece: Jonathan Spruill, Chuck Watson, and Twyla Satterfield; and not to be forgotten is Hubert's faithful pet companion, Jiggy, of 19 years.
Hubert will be remembered for his zest for life and determination, along with his ability to remember family stories and the stories and the history of the places he lived and the people he knew. With a strong mind and dry wit, he lived until the very last. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 13, 2018, at 1:00 PM at Oleander Memorial Gardens in Wilmington with Rev. Steven Johnson officiating. The family will host visitation after the service at his home at 27 Elisha Drive in Wilmington.
Memorials may be made to Community Home Care & Hospice of Leland, 497 Old Waterford Way, Suite 208, Belville, NC 28451, or to Southeastern Hospice House, 1100 Pine Run Drive, Lumberton, NC 28358.
Hubert's daughter, Tracy, is a hospice nurse and Hubert had received end-of-life services over the last year. The family is deeply appreciative to the staff for their attentiveness and loving care.
