Mr. George Brunson Baird, age 69, passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2015, at his home. He was born in Robeson County on August 6, 1945. He graduated from Lumberton High School and later majored in Chemistry at UNCP. He went on to work for Progress Energy as an Environmental Supervisor in the Chemistry Department. He also served in the US Army in the early 1970's as a medic and paratrooper stationed in Germany. Upon retirement from the Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant of Progress Energy, he moved back home to Lumberton. Hunting and fishing with his close friends were among his favorite hobbies. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Norman George Baird and Jimmie Martin Baird, and a nephew, Luther Thompson, Jr. He is survived by his stepmother, Katherine Baird of Atlanta, GA; one sister, Norma Hoffman and husband, Dr. Carl Hoffman, of Wilmington; a nephew, Todd A. Thompson of Lumberton; a half-sister, Kate Burch and her husband, Scott, and children Parker and Wagner, all of Atlanta, GA; and his loyal companion, his yellow lab, Gracie Bell. A private service for family and close friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 55 W.
