Obituary

Evelyn lived a life of 93 years, filled with much joy and fulfillment. She had a personality that won your love upon your first meeting with her. Helping others was her mission in life. Throughout her lifetime, she believed in being a blessing to her family and those who were in need. If she was led to help someone, she followed that leading.

Evelyn was born in Lumberton, NC to her late parents, Howard Taylor and Nellie Taylor on September 24, 1930. She was married to Thad Hyatt and from that union, they were blessed with two incredible sons, Charles Ray Hyatt and Arlie Hyatt. Thad passed away at the young age of 35 and Evelyn became both mother and father, as well as provider for her young boys. She never complained about working long hours to support her sons, but willingly dedicated her life to caring and providing for them.

Some years later, she married Dave Hollinger and was blessed with another precious son, Joe Hollinger. At the age of 62, Dave passed away and once again, Evelyn was a widow, providing for now three boys. She never complained or felt sorry for herself because she was a woman of honor and integrity, completely dedicated to her boys!

She provided for her three boys as the manager at Krystal Restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida for 32 years. With no extended family living near her, she still pressed on with extreme dedication to providing a good life for her sons. Her love for her boys motivated her to attempt a new career.

While continuing her management/waitressing career and still raising her three boys, she stepped out in faith, deciding to enroll in cosmetology school. She dedicated herself to working a full-time job, caring for her boys, and attending college in an effort to make an even better life for her sons. That decision taught her boys that endurance and perseverance must be a way of life. She was teaching them to reach for the stars and rise above any situation in order to invest in the future.

In 1987, she married Dale Kalal and moved to South Carolina, much closer to her brothers and sisters. She had a good life with Dale as they ventured out to visit many places. Sadly, he died suddenly in 2015.

Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory her devoted sons and their wives as they continue the legacy of love and devotion she taught them; Charles (Betty Lou) Hyatt, Arlie (Mickey) Hyatt, and Joe Hollinger. These young men and their families have been fully dedicated to her after she finally conceded to move to Florida to be near them.

She was also truly blessed with grandchildren who loved her endlessly…Kelly Baker, Jessica (Tim) Cullen, Justin Hyatt, Callie (Garrett) Foskey, Tiffany (Frank) Hyde, Steven (Tessa) Hollinger and twelve great grandchildren who she spoiled endlessly, her brothers - Howard Earl Taylor and Kenny Taylor, and her sisters - Mary Lou Register, Nellie Mae Richardson, and Juneal Smith, as well as numerous special nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service on Saturday, November 4, 2023, from 11:00AM - 12:00PM at Floyd Memorial Chapel, 809 E. 5th Street in Lumberton, NC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 12:00 PM with Rev. Anthony Hardin officiating. Burial will follow at New Hollywood Cemetery in Lumberton, NC.
