Obituary

Evdon Jo Macon Stogner, "Miss Jo", passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2024. She was born March 29, 1941 in Elmore County, Alabama to Ruby Blankenship Macon and George Henry Macon.

Miss Jo, as she was known to all, was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Bobby G. Stogner; both her parents; her brothers: Edward Macon, George Thurston Macon, and Billy Macon; her sister, Elizabeth Macon Williamson; a son, Ronald Earl Stogner; and her adopted grandson, Ricky Morgan II.

She is survived by her son, Donald Carl Stogner and wife Sharon of Kernersville, NC; her daughter, Deborah Jo Stogner of the home; her stepson, Michael Stogner of Jamestown, NC; her grandchildren: Catherine Stogner Holley (John), Nicholas Stogner (Caitlyn), Caroline Stogner, Allison Stogner, Lauren Stogner, Holly Stogner, and Taylor Stogner; and her great-grandchildren: Eliza Holley, Hazel Holley, and Kennedy Stogner. Miss Jo is also survived by her adopted daughter, Alice Cromwell Morgan (Ricky); her adopted granddaughters, Rikki Lynn Morgan and Amanda Morgan Hammonds; and her adopted great-grandchildren: Lexie Hinson, Kash Hammonds, and Lola Hammonds. She also leaves behind a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Miss Jo loved all animals, but especially cats. She was never without a cat, or two or more, in her home. She rescued thousands of strays in her lifetime, finding them homes, getting them medical care, or just feeding them and giving them a safe place to stay for a while.

She helped strangers and the less fortunate, and taught her children to do the same. On any given school day she would come home from work to find 8-10 children. If she had it to give, she would, helping the homeless, and battered women. All of her children's friends were welcome at her house. Her only rule was they had to go home to sleep because she didn't have enough room for everyone to spend the night.

In 1968, she and her husband opened the House of Quality. What started as a stereo and electronics shop turned into a pawn shop a few short years later. Miss Jo and Mr. Bob served the people of Robeson and the surrounding counties for years. They treated people with respect and dignity and developed close relationships with many of their customers. Miss Jo always taught her employees to treat everyone equally and respectfully.

During her years as a pawnbroker, Miss Jo traveled with her husband to support the industry throughout the country. They visited pawnshops in nearly all 50 states during their travels, making friends along the way. Miss Jo also served as Regional Vice President, President, and Chairperson of the Board of the North Carolina Pawnbrokers Association. She was instrumental in establishing the Southeast Regional Pawnbrokers convention.

Miss Jo was also an accomplished bench jeweler and designer. She designed and made many custom pieces over the years. Her repair work was so well known that she was offered jobs at other jewelry and pawn shops around the area.

She traveled the world with her husband, Bob, and numerous friends, whitewater rafting in Alaska and Costa Rica; cruising through the Panama Canal for the last time it was under American control; cruising to Europe, dining with the flight crew in Barcelona, sneaking away between courses at a farm in the French country side to eat figs straight from the tree, touring the Vatican and almost getting into a fight, shopping in Venice. She visited every state in the US except for Hawaii. She always said if she got to Hawaii she would either come home and never go back, or go and never come home.

A time of visitation will be held prior to the service on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 2:00-3:00PM at First Baptist Church of Lumberton, 606 N. Walnut Street in Lumberton, NC. Following the visitation, a memorial service will be held at 3:00PM with Pastor Josh Owens officiating.
