Obituary

Elma Grace "E.G." Davis Long, 84, of Raleigh, left her tired and worn body to continue her walk with Jesus on Tuesday, October 9, 2018.  She left this side of eternity in the presence of her daughter and family.  E.G. was born in McDonald, NC, on December 22, 1933 to the late Charles Thompson and Elma Baldwin Davis.  She grew up on the farm along with three sisters, Mary, Dorothy and Margaret, and one brother, Charles. She attended nursing school in Charlotte and began to prepare to serve as a missionary.  While in school she was introduced to Charles Edward Long, who quickly declared his love for her.  Her response was "You'll get over it."  He did not and, in time, the two were married on a very sticky afternoon on August 18, 1955 during Hurricane Diane.

Charlie and E.G. went to Toccoa Falls College in preparation for missionary service with the Christian and Missionary Alliance.  After their home service, they were sent to South Vietnam in 1958, with E.G. being pregnant with their first child.  Charlie and E.G. served as missionaries to the Jarai people of Vietnam until 1974.  With Vietnam no longer open to missionaries, Charlie and E.G. stayed in North Carolina and after a short ministry in Midway, NC, they were called to serve at North Ridge Church in Raleigh, NC where they ministered together for over 26 years.  Although she was never one who chose to be the center of attention, E.G. blessed untold numbers with her quiet, practical, caring, and faithful service.  She continued demonstrating those qualities, without complaint, as Charlie suffered through dementia.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie, in 2011 and a daughter, Susie, in 2017.

E.G. is survived by her children: Nathan and Peggy Long, Ed and Kathy Long, Jon Zeches, and Joby and Mark Mitchell; her grandchildren: Stephen, Jordan, Kristen, Lacey, Anna (Nick), Bethany, Clayton, Jonathan, Seth (Belle), Noah, Scott, and Tana; and a soon-to-be great-grandchild (yet to be named).

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 12, 2018, from 7:00-9:00 PM at North Ridge Church, 7601 Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at 11:00 AM at North Ridge Church. Burial will follow at 4:00 PM at Iona Church Cemetery in Fairmont.
