Obituary

Doris was born on July 27, 1933 in Robeson County to John Colon and Estelle DeHart Crawford. She grew up on a farm near Rowland in Cotton Valley.  From her earliest years she always loved to read.  As she got older she learned to sew and developed into quite a seamstress.  In fact, one of her greatest pleasures later in life was sewing for her grandchildren, smocking dresses and designing hats for cancer patients.

Doris met the love of her life, Guy McCormick, in grade school. They were sweethearts through junior high and high school. Doris graduated from Peace College in 1953 and they were married later that year.

She was a life long member of Rowland Presbyterian Church,  where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Doris' love of reading continued to be a priority in her life.  She was an active member of the Rowland Book Club, as well as an ardent supporter of the Robeson County Friends of the Library.

Doris was an excellent Bridge player, and hosted many meetings of the Rowland Bridge Club during the 60's, 70's and 80's.

She and Guy took ballroom dancing lessons in the mid 1970's and eventually joined the Robeson County Cotillion. Dancing became one of their favorite pastimes.

Doris was a big Tarheels fan and loved watching them play basketball and football. One of the things she looked forward to each Fall during the 70's, 80's and 90's was the annual Robeson County Rams Club football trip. She always spoke fondly of the bus trips to Clemson, Georgia Tech, Virginia and other ACC rival schools.

Doris cherished the time that she served on the Southeastern Regional Medical Center Foundation Board. She always looked forward to planning and attending the annual gala.

Doris' proudest accomplishment was her service to her beloved Peace College. From the time she graduated in 1953, she worked tirelessly to support her alma mater. For many years she was president of the Alumnae Association and was an avid patron of the Loyalty Fund. She enthusiastically recruited students and hosted numerous alumnae luncheons and parties.

Doris loved her hometown of Rowland and was the embodiment of the phrase "bloom where you are planted."

She was preceded in death by her husband Guy in 2008.

She is survived by three children, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
