Obituary

David Asberry Hammond, Sr. of Lumberton, NC, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the age of 77, at home. He was born in Robeson County on January 28, 1946, son of the late George Asbury Hammond & Mae Belle Gause Hammond.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin Hammond and George Elton Hammond; one sister, Ann Hammond Smith; a brother-in-law, Tommy Rogers; and a sister-in-law, Sadie Hammond.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nancy Mountjoy Hammond; his sons: David Asbury Hammond, Jr. and wife Renee Brock Hammond, David Keith Black and wife Cheri Brown Black, and Steven Kyle Hammond and wife Amanda Myers Hammond; his grandchildren: Dylan, Kayle, and Madalyn Black and Gregory and Anna Hammond; his brother, Clyde Hammond (Annette); three sisters: Susie Rogers, Doris Horne (Wayne), and Sondra Guyton (Clifton); two sisters-in-laws, Margaret Hammond and Millie Hammond; a brother-in-law, Lacy Farril Smith Jr.; and his fur-baby, Toby.

David was a loving husband, father, Papa, brother, son, and friend. He loved to take the grandkids to the flea market to see what he could get them. He taught his grandkids how to play cards and they educated him on the latest "hip" games and slang. You could always count on David to try and cheer you up with a joke. He had a story for everything and enjoyed talking with everyone. In his younger years, he raced on a drag strip and was even allowed to drive the bus for school. He dedicated over 40 years to working at United/Kemper Insurance.

The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service on Thursday, November 2, 2023, from 2:00-3:00 PM at Singletary Baptist Church in Lumberton, NC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM with Dr. Adam Hammond and the Rev. Joshua West officiating.  Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, NC.
