David Monroe Barbee, Jr. was born October 6, 1932 in Newarn, Georgia to parents David Monroe Barbee, Sr. and Annie Beatrice Morris. He was an only child.
The family moved to Greensboro and he attended and graduated school there. His job was in an ice cream parlor in a drug store in his hometown of Greensboro. His father was a professional baseball player from 1926-1940. Widely known as a great home run hitter, he played for the Philadelphia Athletics and the Pittsburg Pirates.
David married and had four children and began a 28 year career in the textile industries. He worked with the dyes in the laboratories and traveled for the company.
He began his Christian radio career in Wallace, NC at WLSE. He often served as master of ceremonies for Christian concerts hosting such groups as Gold City Quartet, the Cathedrals, the Florida Boys and many more. His greatest joy was to bring joy to others through music exalting Christ his Savior. It was not unusual for him to customize a special tape or CD for someone who was sick or discouraged. He served WSTS radio station, Laurinburg, NC which covered 20 counties.
He worked closely with his wife of 28 years, Shirley Walters in their own ministry \\"Lighthouse of Love Ministries\\" and ministered in churches in song and word. They served as missionaries in Port-au-Prince, Haiti from 1984-1987 where they manned a radio station and ministered to the missionaries and people of Haiti. They later went to St. Petersburg, FL and then Mississippi also serving Christian radio. They lived in Newbern, NC for 12 years as he worked in Christian radio.
He retired in 2003 and moved to Effingham, SC and joined Abundant Life Fellowship where he served on the praise and worship team. He was not happy unless he was ministering to others in song or music. He also served as a volunteer for Carolinas Hospital Systems and visited area nursing homes to minister song to the sick. He will be sorely missed.
The family wishes to thank all the friends and folks who have prayed and visited and offered consolation, but we are happy for him because we know he is singing praises like never before with his Saviour!
