Charles "Ronnie"
Stansel
Jul 1, 1943 — Mar 11, 2023
Lumberton
Mr. Charles Ronald "Ronnie" Stansel, 79, of Lumberton, NC, completed his earthly mission on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at his home in Lumberton, NC. He was born in Lumberton, NC on July 1, 1943 to the late Charles B. & Sara Adams Stansel.
Following high school, he attended Appalachian State University and The Durham Institute of Barbering. He enjoyed being a barber for over 50 years. His customers knew that when they received a haircut, they would also get his joy, positivity, and, possibly, music on the banjo.
He was a lifetime member of Chestnut Street Methodist Church. Over the years, he taught a children's Sunday School class, served as a superintendent of Sunday School, and loved singing in the choir. Each year, for over 30 years, he took a confirmation class to a service at Duke University Chapel and a tour of the university.
He had a great love for playing bluegrass music on the banjo. He spent many years with different bands and music groups and often played at nursing homes, schools, churches, private parties, and other places. He enjoyed telling about the time the band opened for Josh Turner at the Robeson County Fair, as well as the time he met his musical hero, Earl Scruggs.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Stansel.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Stansel of the home; his sons, Paul Stansel and wife Mercy Cannon of Berea, KY and Joe Stansel of Wilmington, NC; his grandchildren, Cannon Stansel and Amelia Stansel; his sister, Mary Ruth Pittman (O'Neal) of Liberty, MO; his brother, Ben Stansel (Annette) of Cleveland, TN; and several wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and many friends.
The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service on Saturday, March 18, 2023, from 1:30-3:00 PM in the sanctuary at Chestnut Methodist Church, 200 E. 8 th Street in Lumberton, NC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM with Rev. William Gentry officiating. Burial will follow at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, NC.
