Charles Edward Benton, age 84, of Lumberton, NC passed away Wednesday, December 10, 2025, at UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton, NC.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Elaine Benton; his parents, Margie Butler Lewis and David Edward Benton; three brothers: Ernie Lewis, Tommy Lewis, and Johnny Lewis; one sister, Peggy Lewis; and special aunts and uncle, Artie & James Smith and Nora Smith.

Charles is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 61 years, Betty Phillips Benton; their daughter, Nancy Benton Ward (Michael) of Lumberton, NC; their granddaughter, Jessica Green Davis (Jon); and great-granddaughter, Haven.

He is also survived by two brothers, Tim Lewis (Sandra) and Gary Lewis (Beth); his sisters: Elizabeth Andrews, Patricia Kinlaw, Jewel Hunt, Nova Lewis, and Anita Lennon; along with an extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Charles graduated from Bladenboro High School in 1960. He then served as Specialist IV in the U.S. Army in Teletype Operations. After returning home to his new bride in 1965, he began a career at Velcord in Lumberton, NC. Searching for a better opportunity for his family, he was led to a new and upcoming business called Universal Packaging where he eventually became the shipping manager. He retired 25 years later in 1995 at the age of 55.

Fishing, camping, and gardening were among his favorite hobbies. He was an avid bike rider and loved to exercise. His passion for our UNC Tar Heels in every available sport was unmatched.

Charles was known in his community and among friends and family to lend a helping hand whatever the need. Above all, he loved his family. He was known as "Daddy" and "Papa" and will be missed immensely.

The family will receive friends and loved ones prior to the service on Friday, December 12, 2025, from 2:00-3:00 PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc., 809 E. 5th Street in Lumberton, NC. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM with Rev. Tim Lewis and Gary Lewis officiating. Burial will follow at Phillips Family Cemetery, 92 Todd Farm Road in Lumberton, NC.
