Carle Jean Oxendine Hammonds, also known as "Ma Dukes", age 61, of Lumberton, NC, passed peacefully in her sleep on Friday, September 1, 2023. She was born in Lumberton, NC on December 12, 1961 to the late Ruth & Earl Zack Oxendine.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her baby boy, Billy Gene Hammonds; her sisters, Dickie Jean and Tammy Oxendine; and a special granddaughter, Hope Elizabeth Jacobs.

She is survived by her daughters: Billie Carol Hammonds (Jody), Dominique Hammonds (Heath), and Santana Hammonds (David); her son, Israel Hammonds; 7 grandchildren: Saquoyah (Malichi), Destiny, Deejay, Jarlen, Christopher (Mia), Chatler, and DaJa; 4 great-grandchildren: Ra'Niya, Malayah, Meleyah, and Malachi Skye; along with countless bonus children and grandchildren and a host of special friends and loved ones who will miss her greatly.

Mama was a strong, independent woman dedicated to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was also a trash-talker who didn't care if you liked it or not, but Ma was Ma, take it or leave it.

The family will receive friends and loved ones on Wednesday, September 6, 2023, from 6:00-8:00 PM at Floyd Mortuary & Crematory, Inc., 809 E. 5th Street in Lumberton, NC.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023, at 3:00 PM at Floyd Memory Gardens, 3720 Old Whiteville Road in Lumberton, NC.
