Obituary

Robert Edward "Bobby" Britt, 89, of Lumberton, NC, passed from his earthly life on Friday, September 16, 2022, at Southeastern Hospice House in Lumberton, NC. He was born in Lumberton on May 17, 1933, son of the late Luther Joseph & Alice Anne Elizabeth Britt. He was devoted to five generations of his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Derek Burns Britt, and his sister, Anne Britt Meiers.

He is survived by his loving family: his wife of 63 years, Frances Burns Britt of the home; his sons, Frederick Brian Britt of Charlotte, NC and Edward Scott Britt of Carolina Beach, NC and Lumberton, NC; his grandchildren, Wyatt Frederick Britt and Morgan Diane Britt, both of Houston, TX.

He was educated in the Lumberton City Schools (Class of 1952) and Campbell College. He worked as an architectural draftsman and then began his career of 32 years as an engineer in the construction division of the NC Department of Transportation. He assisted in building roads and bridges, including the early phases of I-95. He retired in 1996.

In addition to work, he found joy in family and his recreational life. He owned boats of various kinds from an early age. A speedboat provided great competitive water-skiing fun with his beloved sister and brother-in-law on summer vacations at White Lake. Fishing trips with his sons and friends were numerous. His last boat was a sailboat which he named FranSea. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, flying an airplane, camping, and traveling to historic sites with family and friends. He was also an avid reader, but always non-fiction.

After retirement, he played golf. He found new friends when he began delivering for Meals on Wheels to the homebound. He always had a cheerful, teasing greeting which made the recipients smile. He did that for several years.

His last favorite activity was sitting on his porch with his cats, watching squirrels and birds in the trees. He was a man of faith and said he talked to Jesus in those hours on his porch. He was a longtime member of Chestnut Street United Methodist Church in Lumberton, NC.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Lumberton, NC with Pastor Herbert Lowry officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends and loved ones at the graveside.
