Barbara Matthies Lumpkin departed us in body Tuesday, July 19, 2022, with loving family at her side. Her spirit is with the living and her soul is with the Lord. She was born on March 26, 1947, in Sioux Falls, SD to the late Harvey & Josephine Matthies.

Barbara married the love of her life, Thomas, in 1972 in Puerto Rico. Together they had two children, Amy and John.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles, and her son, John.

She is survived by her husband, Thomas; her daughter, Amy; a daughter-in-law, Kelly; her granddaughter, Jordan; two sisters, Joyce Scholten (Lyle) of Corsicana, TX and Roxanne Johnson (Jerry) of Sioux Falls, SD; four brothers: Harvey of Andover, MN, John (Judy) of West Des Moines, IA, and Henry (Linda) and Douglas, both of Hartford, SD; several nieces and nephews; her most faithful friends: Judy Reiter, Janet Crumpler, and Melody Hager; and her pet cat, Punky.

After graduating from Randolph College where she studied interior design, she was employed in a design shop and mostly a homemaker who enjoyed cooking and baking delicious goodies. Her favorite pastimes were talking on the phone with friends and family for hours and putting together 1000-piece puzzles. Her favorite place to visit was Williamsburg, VA where she enjoyed the quaintness, shopping, and restaurants.

Barbara was a devout Christian who loved attending church and the fellowship of her Sunday School class at Godwin Heights Baptist Church. Christmas was her favorite time of the year and she enjoyed decorating her home and going to Christmas musicals.

She is forever in our hearts and will be missed by all who knew her.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date at her home.
