Obituary

Annette Franklin King MacLeod died peacefully in hospice care on Monday, March 27, 2017. Born to Paul Gustave Franklin and Annie Moore Franklin on October 31, 1919 in Statesboro, Georgia, Annette graduated as Salutatorian from Statesboro High School, before entering Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. While there, she met a dashing, dental student named David DeWitt King, Jr. After both graduated, and WWII had begun, they married on February 20, 1943. Annette followed Dave around the country during his army dental career from Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington D.C., and eventually to Daytona Beach, Florida where Dave was working to rehabilitate soldiers returning from the Front at Welsh Convalescent Center.

While still in Daytona Beach, their son, David DeWitt King III, was born on May 5, 1946. After Dave was discharged following the war, they settled in Lumberton, North Carolina, where Dave joined his father's dental practice. On June 10, 1949, their daughter, Carol Ann King, was born. The next 20 years were spent raising their children and enjoying life, especially time spent traveling and at the beach.

Dave and Annette were married 48 years, ending with Dave's death in 1991. Years later, Annette married Rev. James B. "Bummy" MacLeod, a union that lasted 13 years until his death in 2012.

Annette was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother Paul Franklin, Jr. of Statesboro; and her sister, Barbara Brannen of North Myrtle Beach.

Annette loved her family, friends, her church (Chestnut Street UMC), and community. She enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, reading, book club, birds, flowers, chocolate, and keeping up with the details of everyone's comings and goings. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend.

Annette is survived by her children: David DeWitt King III and wife Sue of Raleigh, Carol King Elmore and husband Frank of Hendersonville; her grandchildren: Catherine Elizabeth, Jonathan David, Bessie Blair Haulk and husband Ryan, and Christopher David Elmore and wife Lauren of Kernersville; her great-grandchildren: Caroline, Kaitlyn, Alexendra, and Elizabeth; a brother-in-law, Orren Brannen of North Myrtle Beach; five nieces: Gloria Bailey, Margaret Whitson, Susan Brannen, Ann Oliver, and Virginia Anne Waters; two nephews: Jim Brannen and Justin Oliver; and her step-children: Suzie Dedrick, Emily Davis, and James B. MacLeod.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 31, 2017, from 7:00-8:30 PM at Floyd Mortuary and Crematory, 809 E. 5th Street, Lumberton.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2017, at 11:00 AM at Chestnut Street United Methodist Church in Lumberton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Chestnut Street United Methodist Church, 200 E. 8th Street, Lumberton, NC 28358; or to Southeastern Hospice, 2002 N. Cedar St., Lumberton, NC 28358.
