André Mincey
Strickland
Jul 14, 1934 — Apr 11, 2025
Lumber
André Mincey Strickland, age 90, of Lumberton, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2025 at UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton. She was born on July 14, 1934 to the late Fulton McDuffie Mincey and to the late Mittie Caroline Smith Mincey in Horry County, SC.
André was loved tremendously by her family and friends. She loved her Lord Jesus and served Him for many years as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher at Cedar Grove and North Lumberton Baptist Churches, where her love for missions was always evident. Some of her favorite topics to study and discuss were angels and the Book of Revelation.
André was a strong and independent woman and a wonderful mother. She taught her three girls that there was no limit to what they could achieve. She celebrated their accomplishments and was immensely proud of her family. Small in stature and giant in heart, André was beloved for her fierce personality, wisdom, and quick wit, and was admired by everyone who knew her.
André graduated valedictorian from Floyd's High School in Horry County, South Carolina, and represented her home county at Girls State, where she was elected Commissioner of Agriculture. As a young woman, she participated in school plays, modeling, and musicals. André Mincey met James Robert Strickland in Barnesville, North Carolina when he returned from serving in the United States Army. They married three months later and remained inseparable for 71 years. Their lives together have been blessed with three daughters (and sons-in-law), five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
For over 30 years, André worked as a bookkeeper at WAGR/WJSK radio station. An excellent cook, gardener, and seamstress, she was never far from a jigsaw or crossword puzzle, and her favorite days were spent with her family, especially around the holidays. Christmas was her favorite. The table in André's house was always crowded, for she always had room for one more.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harry F. Mincey and her son-in-law, Gerald Walker. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, James Robert Strickland, of the home; three daughters, Rose Walker of Lumberton, Dee McIntyre and her husband, Congressman Mike McIntyre of Hillsborough, and Donna Astle and her husband, Rev. Rick Astle of Lumberton; five grandsons, Dr. Ash Walker and wife, Dr. Desiree Walker of Lumberton, Robert Trent Walker of Asheville, Joshua McIntyre and wife, Sarah Hill Colwell McIntyre of Durham, Stephen McIntyre and wife, Judge Angelica Chavis McIntyre of Lumberton, and John Astle and wife, Hope Astle, of Mint Hill; and four great-grandchildren, Riley Astle, Hamilton McIntyre, Will McIntyre, and Ruth McIntyre.
