Daniel Murphy Boone, age 96, of Lumberton, NC passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 at Glen Flora in Lumberton. He was born in Robeson County, NC on March 23, 1917 to the late Edwin Theodore Boone and the late Minnie Magnolia Crawley Boone. He was a self-employed farmer.

Mr. Boone served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was awarded the Oak Leaf Cluster in addition to the Air Medal. Daniel M. Boone, Technical Sergeant, Army Air Forces, United States Army. For meritorious achievement while serving as Engineer on a B-24 aircraft on a bombing mission over enemy occupied territory, 20 June 1944. Sergeant Boone’s aircraft lost two engines on the bombing run and received extensive damage from enemy anti-aircraft fire. Sergeant Boone immediately transferred fuel to cross feed and made all possible repairs to effect the safe return of his aircraft. Throughout the difficult return trip, Sergeant Boone’s outstanding performance of duty greatly assisted in the return of this well trained crew, reflecting high credit upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States. He entered military service from North Carolina.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Alford Boone; two sisters and three brothers. Mr. Boone is survived by two sons, Josiah A. Boone of Lumberton and Stephen M. Boone and wife Sheila of Raleigh; two daughters, Janet B. Altman and husband Steve of Columbia, SC and M. Katherine Boone of Santa Ynez, CA; sisters, Katherine Bridgers of Tarboro, Rebecca Boone of Corvallis, OR, and Dorothy McDaniel of Beaufort, SC; four grandchildren, Michael J. Altman, Matthew L. Altman, Graceanne W. Boone, and Caroline W. Boone; and three great-grandchildren, Steinichen J. Altman, Ollister D. Altman, and Gideon K. Altman.
